What is a Bund?
Basically a bund or bunding is used as a spill prevention tool. More commonly bunds are there just in case you have a spill and are seldom used ‘in anger’ but are very handy for spill containment in areas where liquids are being transfered either from a container (e.g. from a leagr drum to a smaller container) or to a tank (i.e from a drum or tanker to a tank).
Traditionally bunds were fully self contained spill containment area usually boarded by concrete walls or brick walls. Often lined with a nonreactive ‘plastic’ liner in spill prevention. Now-a-days businesses need better more flexible spill management so there are many more useful additions to the more traditional form of bund.

Drain Filter Spill Management:
Whilst a Drain Filter (or Drain Warden as they are often called) is not strictly a bund it is a bund of sorts. It performs two primary roles:
- To filter out heavy particulates that might otherwise wash into a storm-water drain. This may include thing like cigarette buts, metal shavings, wood shavings etc.
- As an oil spill cleanup product that removes oily residues that might otherwise stay mixed up in driveway runoff and find its way into the storm-water. This is a very useful item to have near wash down areas or in car parks where rain may wash off large areas of contaminated concrete.
As you can see from the slide show a Drain Filter looks a bit like a ‘witch’s hat’. They are very easy to fit and maintain.
Large Soft Sided Bund:
The large, black soft sided bund has many uses. It is particularly good because it is portable. Which means it can be:
- packed away when not required,
- moved around a workshop and placed where it is most useful,
- can be taken out to a remote location,
- used under large vehicles to perform on site repairs,
- moved to a new workshop when you out grow your existing workshop.
- a small spill clean up can be done very quickly using an inexpensive absorbent,
Having soft sides means then can be ‘run over’ by fork lifts and other vehicles and they simply spring back.
Workshop Bund:
One of the biggest time wasters in any workshop is an oil spill cleanup. Having a portable bund to sit liquid containers in can save hours and hours of time wasting used when an oil spill clean up is required. Not only is the spill response very simple, liquids trapped in bunds are not transferred so floor areas stay safe and dry. These small yellow bunds have foam filled walls which means they can be run over. They can be moved easily and are great for on the floor or on a bench.
A Bund is an excellent spill prevention tool for placing under refueling stations to catch any drips or small oil spills. Adding a small amount of Absorbent 15 to the bund means you will have no ‘splashes’ escape and no secondary spill clean up to bother with!
3m Oil Boom:
Again whilst not strictly a bund a 3m oil boom with clips can be you best and fastest oil spill response product when you have a spill. Simple to deploy quickly. Just by clipping 3 together you can surround an 18m area in no time ensuring that the spill containment is achieved which in turn allows time to go and retrieve the absorbents, absorbent pads and staff you may require to clean up the spill.
